Tour to Citadel, Coptic and Islamic Cairo.
Coptic Cairo: Legend tells us the Holy Family took refuge when fleeing from Herod. After the spread of Christianity throughout Egypt, it became a Christian stronghold, with as many as 7 historical active churches built within an area of just 12 acres, along with the earliest mosque ever built in Egypt. Explore the remains of the fortress of Babylon, the Church of St. Sergio, the Hanging Church, the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate for centuries, and Egypt’s oldest synagogue in Cairo, Ben Ezra. Finish your tour at the Coptic museum where artifacts collected from historical churches and monasteries are on display.
The Citadel, City of the Dead, and walking tour in Medieval Islamic Cairo: The hilltop Citadel is a spectacular medieval fortress. The citadel is the fortress thatSalah el Din built to fight off the Crusaders in the 12th Century. Inside the Citadel we’ll visit a mosque and several museums of your choice. Visiting the citadel mosques offers a good chance to understand Islam, a religion practiced by one fifth of the world’s population. After visiting the citadel you will head up to the City of the Dead. Inside the City of the Dead we will see how a cemetery catering to the masses of Cairo became a working city with the living, living among the tombs of the dead. From the Citadel we will head downhill and ask you to put on your walking shoes for our walking tour through Medieval Islamic Cairo– a maze of over 30 mosques and monuments that span some 800 years. Discover the graceful architecture of Medieval and Islamic Cairo’s historical buildings. The walking tour takes you from one of the remaining gates of the city, to Khan El Khalili Bazaar a thriving, bustling market dedicated for trade since the 14th century. There we will have local food at the Arabian style Naguib Mahfouz restaurant. Before and after the lunch we will walk through alleys, markets and visit some historical buildings rarely seen by foreigners. We will visit the Bab Elftouh, a gateway from the Middle Ages, a house, Sabil, and markets selling everything imaginable. View dozens of historical buildings on the way. Khan el Khalili is a great place to test your bargaining skills while buying souvenirs.
